Ive launched, bought, sold, and managed many businesses in 30 years. Ive slowed down on the buying and selling businesses in recent years, Im 55 years old.

But still love launching and advising startups, and writing about them.

Ive helped a good friend launch an art gallery. I advised against it, with facts, proof, insight, wisdom and actual numbers. But it was Mr Artists dream.

He had two things going for him -- he owned the building outright and volunteers (like me which he knows is a big deal).

But still....the first six months have been weak. In fact, Im the top sales person ...mainly from direct mail, Internet, parties and contacts.

The bottom line is this: artists create from their love, pain, passion or whatever.

Artists typically don;t care what the market wants. And this is why theyre starving.

But if artists want to increase sales they need to feed into the current, not future, market demand.

As a Puerto Rican girl from Philadelphia I have been told numerous times on what I "cant" do. It started early on in my childhood because I was told Hispanics could not accomplish anything. I was expected to drop out of school, join a gang, get pregnant at 16 and other stereotypes. I was even told I was brown eyed (even though my eyes are clearly green). Gender also played a part. I wasnt suppose to read comic books because I was a girl. I shouldnt be collecting action figures or wearing comic themed t-shirts. I was weak because males are the stronger sex. These criticisms often came from strangers, kids on the playground or classmates. Teachers have told me because I had "the face of an angel" I wasnt very smart. When I began costuming in 2006 I was told repeatedly by followers of cosplay (never from a cosplayer) that this was a hobby I should give up because there arent many Latinos in geekdom. I couldnt do it. Supergirl isnt Puerto Rican. There are no Hispanic Final Fantasy characters. There is no Latina Disney Princess. Once again, I decided not to listen and had the courage to cosplay whoever I wanted. Along the way, I have encountered other individuals who do not let gender, race or weight stop them from portraying their favorite characters.

Recently a group of friends visited me from out of town. We had a blast hanging out and doing impromptu photo shoots with many different costumes. One of my favorite shots from the day is of me and Shemika Berry as Harley and Ivy. When I saw the photo, I thought it was a powerful statement on cosplay freedom and how it sends the message on not being afraid of costuming whoever you want. The photo features a Latina as Harley Quinn and an African-American woman as Ivy. And we look fabulous. Cosplay is about creative freedom. If you want to be a gender bender Steampunk Maleficent, go for it! Ethnic Zombie Disney Princess? Yes, please. Dont match the skin tone of the character you want to portray? So what! Plus size superhero? Done! Dont let anything stop you. At the 2014 Dragoncon convention I participated in my first gender swap group. The theme was The Walking Dead and I was Carl Grimes. I cant tell you how much fun and exciting it was to do something different and express our fandom at the same time. If I had listened to the haters, I would not have wonderful experiences such as that.


Let me tell you what this Latina did in the midst of the masses who said I couldnt do anything in life. I graduated High School. I took some collage courses. I have been paid to model. I have been published nationwide for modeling in publications such as Latina Magazine. I wrote an article for a national magazine on Bratz doll collecting. I have worked in Early Child Hood Education for many years. I have been a guest at shows. I write product reviews for my Blog. I started my own birthday entertainment business and I do princess parties. I started the Pennsylvania branch of the Heroes Alliance and manage a team of volunteers and together we do numerous charity events. I moved to the suburbs and am in a stable relationship and we have our own home (and two beautiful cats). I cosplay whoever I want.

Not bad for a Puerto Rican girl who was told she wouldnt amount to anything. My point, friends? Dont listen to the haters and have the courage to cosplay whoever you want and also, have the courage to do whatever you want in your life. It is yours after all :)  #cosplayequality

Why Parental Supervision of Minors Cons is Important

Youve all heard the story of the 17 year old girl who was found bloody and unconscious at the 2014 San Diego Comic-Con. At first reports stated that she was attacked and sexually assaulted but it was later confirmed by  the San Diego Police Department that no such thing had occurred. She had in fact fell while attempting to climb a 6 foot gate and was discovered by the pool of the Marriott Hotel at around 1am. Throughout this entire ordeal I have repeatedly asked myself the same question: where were her parents?



Ive noticed an increasing trend throughout the years as conventions have become more popular. Parents drop their kids off and leave. When did a Comic-Con become a Day Care Center? Do parents not realize that the organizers of these shows are not legally responsible for their children? Arent they the least bit curious as to where their kids are going and whom they are spending time with? Arent they concerned for their safety? Your child is a minor and a minor requires adult supervision. As someone who has completed several certified courses in Early Childhood Development and was in Early Childhood Education for 10 years, this boggles my mind.

Because the underage Roger Rabbit cosplayer at this years San Diego Comic-Con was not properly supervised, her evening ended with a suspicious 29 year old male (its not okay for a man that age to spend time alone with a minor ever) and suffering from a  6 foot fall. Her injuries include eye socket and skull fractures and bleeding from the brain. She also had drugs in her system. Shes lucky she wasnt killed.

Where were her parents?

Everyone needs to learn from this horrible situation. Comic-Cons, shows and events are not a "get out of parenting for the afternoon" card. If your child is a minor, you need to provide them with adult supervision. If you cant do it, find someone else who can. And if your child doesnt like it, thats tough. End of story, No excuse. Failing to do so can have deadly consequences.

I was browsing Quantcast figures to see if there were any clues as to why my own were so dreadful.  I checked out the top sites to see how they were doing.

A site called diply.com caught my eye.  Dramatic growth in traffic as evidenced by the Quantcast graph below.  Look at those visitor numbers since 2014!

"So what are they?" I wondered.

Moments later I was looking at the Diply front page.  Lets look at it together...

Ah.  Its one of those sites.  Full of titles that hint at information you simply must know about - presented in bite size chunks as the frequent use of numbers indicates.  The 10 best this, the 4 worst those.

Diply encourages YOU to contribute.  Sign up with your Facebook.  Get social and get posting.

It looks like a fun read, a magazine style for the quickly browsing mobile reader.  The visitor numbers show how popular it has become.

So can anyone write for them?

Yes - they can!  Of course they can.  This is reader generated content for the generation that believes in its right to be heard.  OK, thats fine.  For some of us there is another question.

Is there any money in it?

Diply host adverts so they must be making a turn on the amount of traffic that comes through.  I checked their sign-up conditions carefully.

Sadly, there is nothing in there about earning for writing.  Sure I can share my thoughts and my legally obtained pictures and non-plagiarised copy - but as for cents...  None at all on offer.

If I have missed a trick and there is a way to earn from Diply please let me know.  But spare me the free publicity angle.  You need to shout pretty loud in that amount of traffic to get heard.

What to do with abnormal PSA results in a young man

A 45-year-old man in excellent health with no family history of prostate cancer had a screening PSA done three years ago which was in the range of 4.0 ng/mL. He has been followed by a urologist, and the test was repeated several times without much change.

In June of this year, his PSA was 4.6 and the free PSA was 0.6 for a ratio of 0.13. He was given a course of antibiotics for presumed prostatitis, and repeat testing a month later showed a PSA of 3.8 with a free PSA of 0.5. Because the PSA was less than 4, a ratio was not calculated.

The patient obtained copies of the reports. The from June one states the following: "When total PSA is in the range of 4.0-10.0 ng/mL, a free PSA/total PSA ratio of less than or equal to 0.10 indicates a 49% to 65% risk of prostate cancer depending on age. A free PSA/total PSA ratio of greater than 0.25 indicates a 9% to 16% risk of prostate cancer depending on age." It does not comment on the significance of a ratio of 0.13, which I have looked up. The cancer risk is in the area of 20%-25%. However, no source gave estimates for men under the age of 50.

On examination, his urologist can feel no nodules. He has recommended that the patient undergo an MRI of the prostate.

Stating that an MRI is not indicated in a man of his age with his history, the patients insurance company will not pay for the test and suggested a trans-rectal ultrasound. The urologist advised the patient not to have an ultrasound due to his age and the potential for complications. A hospital quoted him an out-of-pocket price of $2500 for the MRI.

The urologist has told him that random biopsies may not be accurate and there is a risk of complications.

When he had his first PSA done three years ago, I had expressed surprise and wondered why it had been offered to him. The patient said his internist told him he should have the test.

He is concerned about these recent results and has asked me for advice which I am not qualified to give.

Numerous urologists responded on Twitter with more than 60 tweets about this post. Suggestions for the next step were as follows: trans-rectal ultrasound (TRUS) and biopsy as mentioned by Dr. Cooperberg below; going ahead with the MRI; repeating the PSA in 3 months; go for a second opinion by a recognized expert in prostate cancer.

One urologist emailed me to point out that even if the patient has cancer, it is probably not an aggressive type because his PSA has not risen in 3 years.

Another urologist gave me the name of an expert in the patients geographic area. 

The patient has already scheduled an appointment for a second opinion.

Okay, so now what you want to do is go to Google, and search for any website that posts information and updates about the specific niche that you chose to base your twitter account on.

When you find the site you want, look for something on the page that will link you to that websites RSS feed, If you have trouble finding if they provide feeds or not, you can either go to "FIND" or "SEARCH" located in your browsers toolbar and type RSS in the search box, or enter the web site address in Google and add rss after it.

This will usually bring you to a page where you can select what rss feed you want, some sites offer multiple rss feeds so select the one you feel fits your needs.

Go back to twitterfeed.com, and create a new feed.

For this step all you have to do is copy the url of the feed you want to use, and paste it in to twitterfeed.

Add whatever you want for the name, and in the "Blog URL or RSS Feed URL" area, copy/paste (add) the url of the rss feed you want to use.

Also you may have noticed that in the modified link "advert_type=int" has been removed, this is because TwitterFeed has issues showing the interstitial ad (full page ad) and just leads to a dead page when clicked, or shows the ads but doesnt redirect to the desired page, so the only way to fix this is by removing the "advert_type=int" instruction from the link and adf.ly will automatically use the interstitial link instruction and will work properly with TwitterFeed.

Now when thats done, all you have to do is copy and paste your new link into the twitterfeed Custom endpoint box and "Continue to step 2" on twitterfeed.

LAST STEP!!!

Make sure that you are logged in to the twitter account that you want to use with twitterfeed, you are going to want to activate your twitter account with twitterfeeds oauth so it will automatically post feed/blog updates to your twitter account using the rss feed that you provided to twitterfeed, when thats all done, click done at the bottom, twitter will now get updated feed posts from twitterfeed, and the links in each post will now be automatically shrunk using adf.ly and posted to your twitter updates, and every time someone clicks your adf.ly link, you make a bit of cash.

Interview Kevin Porter

Actor Kevin Porter has won the geek world over with his portrayal of Batman in the fan films Seeds of Arkham and Batman: City of Scars. He has been hailed by fans as one of the best actors to ever wear the cape and cowl. Kevin took some time to talk to the Confessions of a Cosplay Girl Blog about how he got involved with Bat in the Sun productions, preparing for the role of the Caped Crusader, his thoughts on Ben Affleck and much more!



Victoria: How long have you been acting and are you trained in the arts?

 Kevin: I’ve been acting since college. I went to Newberry College in South Carolina on a football scholarship and was approached my freshman year to audition for the Robert Bolt play ‘A Man for all Seasons’. I fell in love with acting and theater at that point and it’s been a part of my life ever since.

 Victoria: How did you get involved with Bat in the Sun studios?

 Kevin: I first met Aaron and Sean Schoenke at the San Diego Comic Con in 2003. I was there making a Batman appearance for DC and Mattel. Aaron had a Bat in the Sun t-shirt on, and I was familiar with their first film “Batman Beyond: Year One”. I commented to them about it while on set, that’s actually caught on tape as Sean was filming all of this. They later reached out through a mutual connection and offered me the role of Batman in their next project.

Victoria: Are you a comic book fan?

Kevin: Always. I am a huge fan of the source material as that’s where the truth of the characters lies, in the intent of the writers. I have been an avid collector all of my life.

Victoria: How long does it take to complete a Bat in the Sun film?

Kevin: Well, for me, its pretty quick. I get the call from the guys and a specific date. That gives me lead time to get to where I need to be physically. City of Scars was an anomaly as it took well over a year and countless nights but mostly, with these mini-shorts as I call them that they are doing now, they are shot in a day or maybe two. But the true work comes after the shoot when Aaron pours over the footage and assembles the amazing edits that he does time and again. People don’t recognize Aaron’s genius editing as much. They all know what a great director he is, but the Schoenkes are the total package and have no weak spots. 

Victoria: What are your thoughts on Ben Affleck being cast as Batman in the Man of Steel sequel?

 Kevin: I think that he will do well. Hes older, wiser and the suit will do most of the work. I trust Zack Snyder.

 Victoria: How did you prepare to play the role of Batman?

 Kevin: Its just something that is within me. Its very natural to shift gears. I am not this way in my everyday life. My demeanor is much more upbeat. But there is something that is amazing about the duality. This double life and putting on this second skin that brings out some hidden dark side. You access your pain, anger, rage...Its cathartic in a way.

 Victoria: Why do you think Batman is such a popular character in comics and pop culture?

 Kevin: Batman is American mythology. Its a child’s character that also matures with us as we grow. There are various interpretations for each stage of development. It’s a human hero that endures, who is flawed but triumphs. His heart, his drive and yes that dark side that most people never admit to having. Bottom line, Batman is cool. Theres no arguing that! 

Victoria: What other film projects do you have coming up?

 Kevin: I just got word this week that I have been cast in a new film starring Jackson Rathbone. I play a biker and have a couple of great scenes with Andrew Dice Clay. It shoots in December and I couldn’t be more excited.

 Victoria: What does your convention schedule look like for 2014?


 Kevin: I’m not really sure. I have a few films lined up so my schedule may not accommodate many conventions. I would love to attend more as I love getting out and meeting people that appreciate the work. I will be at San Diego, thats certain!

I’m sure you have read several recent studies suggesting that current general surgery residents are poorly trained and unprepared for independent practice at the completion of residency.

My questions for you:

1. In general, do you agree that current general surgery residents are poorly trained and unable to operate independently at the completion of residency?

2. What should we do differently? I personally don’t feel that “more simulation activities”, which many have suggested, is an adequate solution.

I have been out of the surgical education loop for a few years and no longer have first-hand experience, but the literature does indicate that some surgical residency graduates are not ready to practice by themselves.

In 2013, I blogged about an Annals of Surgery paper reporting as many as one third of subspecialty general surgery fellowship directors felt that about one-third of incoming fellows were deficient in several areas and unable to independently perform a laparoscopic cholecystectomy or 30 minutes of a major case unsupervised.

This paper was criticized by some because the fellowship directors surveyed were not subspecialtists recognized by the ACGME. The implication was that fellows in these programs might not be representative of all surgical graduates. However, many of them were minimally invasive fellowship programs which continue to be highly sought after.

Does it really matter? Some general surgery graduates apparently can’t operate by themselves.

In 2011, I blogged about a paper that reported 27% of all graduating surgical residents surveyed were not confident performing surgery by themselves. That was approximately the same percentage identified by the fellowship program directors.

Regarding what can be done about the issues of confidence and traing, I agree with you about simulation. You can simulate all you want, but being alone at 2 AM with a patient who is bleeding out cannot be adequately simulated.

The American College of Surgeons created a Transition to Practice Fellowship in 2013. They later change the name from a fellowship to a program. Of course, I blogged about this too. As far as I know, not many hospitals are involved. How many graduating residents have enrolled in this fellowship program is unknown.

Henry Buchwald, a prominent senior surgeon, recently advocated establishing “open surgery” fellowships and wrote, “I submit that it would behoove our training programs to return open surgery schooling to their curricula.” However, he doesn’t explain how this could be done or where one would go to do a fellowship and open surgery.

Life imitates art. In a post last year, I cited the visionary surgeon Leo Gordon who saw it coming in 2002. He predicted the need for a "macrolaparotomy" course, and said it could be run by the newly created "American Board of Open Surgery."

The lack of confidence stems from the gradual increase in supervision of residents over the last 15 to 20 years. In yet another blog post, I pointed out that many of today’s residents rarely if ever operate independently during residency training. To realize you are on your own as a full-fledged surgeon without ever having performed a case by yourself must be frightening.

With all the ACGME regulations, medicolegal concerns, and extensive scrutiny surgeons and trainees are subjected to, I don’t see this problem going away anytime soon.

All you can do as a surgical resident is to try to scrub on as many cases as possible and take care of as many patients as you can. With luck, you may have faculty who have enough confidence in themselves to allow you some autonomy and decision making in the OR and when managing patients pre-and postoperatively.
